Megan March Planned
As a transplanted black West Virginian (born and raised in Whitman Creek in Logan County) I read with interest a Feb. 28 Associated Press article reporting the Williams family's outrage over seemingly light sentences given the attackers of their daughter, Megan; I share their outrage, but I blame them more than I do the county prosecutor.
Black and white in West Virginia: Will Megan Williams case reveal the progress of race relations, despite the outside interference?
Carmen Williams stood with tears in her eyes outside the courtroom where two people convicted of abusing her daughter had just been sentenced Thursday.
She was of two minds. "It's a relief just to get it over with," she said, then followed that with, "We're not completely satisfied."
Frankie
Brewster
and
Karen
Burton
will
both be
sentenced
Thursday.
The
hearings
begin at
9 a.m.
at the
Logan
County
Courthouse.
Megan's parents held a press
conference Wednesday at the
First Baptist Church in
Charleston to provide an
update on their daughter and
to vent frustration over
plea deals given to her
alleged attackers.

Megan Williams' parents talk
about daughter's ordeal
"We were OK with the first
two deals that (Abraham)
made with Alisha Burton and
George Messer, but then he
started getting up to plea
deals with Karen Burton and
Frankie Brewster,'' said
Carmen Williams, referring
to four of the defendants.
"I think they should have
gotten, to be honest, life
in prison. We were very
dissatisfied.''

Williams family says sentences too light, calls
for protest march
Frankie Brewster, 49, pleaded to second-degree sexual assault for forcing Williams to perform oral sex on her, according to Logan County Prosecuting Attorney Brian Abraham.
Brewster faces between 10
and 25 years in jail when
she is sentenced, Abraham
said. Brewster's
age was a factor in the plea
agreement, he said.
"A 10- to 25-year sentence
may result in life for her.
It's certainly a very
lengthy sentence,'' he said.

Fourth pleads guilty in Williams case
Shabazz did not explicitly describe the surgery, noting that it had to do with a stick prosecutors gathered from the trailer in Big Creek where the 20-year-old black woman was allegedly held captive and forced to eat animal feces, sexually assaulted and stabbed.
“A stick was found in the residence with brown and red stains,” Shabazz said. “Megan Williams has had to have surgeries for injuries related to that piece of evidence.” Shabazz said Williams expected to be released from the hospital Monday.

Shabazz addresses hate
crimes charges,
Williams’ health
Alisha Burton
admitted to slapping
Williams on several
occasions, punching her
once, striking her with
a sandal so hard that it
broke and hitting her
across the buttocks with
a stick, Abraham said.
"The investigation reached the conclusion that the people residing in the trailer and visiting the trailer were engaged in a lifestyle where they would consume alcohol or other substances and as a result become very violent with one another," he said. "Megan Williams moved into this environment and stayed with Bobby."
"I think that it is good that we got one but she wasn't there hating by herself," said the Rev. Al Sharpton, who attended a Charleston rally for Williams in December. "They all should have been charged with a hate crime. I don't think one charge would have been filed had it not been for the public outcry."

Black leaders react to indictments in Williams case
A Logan County grand jury handed up indictments Tuesday charging Bobby Brewster, 24; his mother, Frankie Brewster, 49, of Big Creek; Danny Combs, 20, of Harts; Karen Burton, 46, of Chapmanville; and her son, Linnie Burton Jr., in the case.
Two other defendants -- Karen Burton's daughter, 23-year-old Alisha Burton, and 27-year-old George A. Messer -- each pleaded guilty Friday ...

OLDER NEWS
Christie Messer said she visited her
brother on Friday, Sept. 7, at his trailer in
Big Ugly. He had recently reunited with his
girlfriend, Alisha Burton, and moved out of the
Brewster trailer.
It was there that Christie Messer says she found
Megan Williams in a back bedroom, eating
macaroni out of a bowl on the floor.
"When I walked into the room and I first saw her
eyes and that she was almost bald headed, I knew
something was wrong," Christie Messer said.
Williams was in black lingerie, with cuts on her
body that were clearly infected.
"I couldn't believe someone was still alive in
that shape," she said. "I don't know anyone who
could have went through that and survived."
Christie Messer said she let Williams out of the
bedroom. She gave her the keys to her car and
told her to go to the car, but Williams refused
to leave, she said.

(DEAD LINK REMOVED)
Megan talks about her alleged kidnappers saying, "Karen she held a 9mm gun to my head and asked me if I believe in God... and I said yes... and she said what if I blew your brains out... yes I would." "They all took turns kicking me in the head with steel toe boots, they beat me with several objects... shoes, a belt, a fly swatter handle, a cedar stick." "They had made a noose and they said they were going to hang me. They asked me if I wanted to see it and I said no... I'm sorry... I was scared... I didn't know what else to do."

Megan Williams Talks to Deborah Linz (Edited and Unedited videos)
Carmen Williams (CW):
Yes, it was a setup, she left her there. When
Megan was in the hospital, Christa called and I
answered the phone. Christa was asking, ‘how is
my friend?’ I told her that she wasn’t a friend
of Megan’s because she left her. Christa then
hung up the phone. We have not seen or heard
from Christa since that time.
The police investigators say they are trying to
locate her for an interview, but have not been
able to find her.
FC: There were some news reports that you had a
relationship with one of the defendants, Bobby
Brewster. Is this accurate?
MW: We were just friends. It was nothing like
that.
FC: No dating relationship between you and
defendant Bobby Brewster?
MW: No. They kicked me in the head with steel
toed boots, they hit me in the head with several
objects, I remember seeing a knife, and they
tried to cut my foot off. They told me that is
what they did to Kunta Kinte when they cut his
foot off so he couldn’t run and that is what
they were going to do to me. Read
